Pangasinan Tourism Council revitalized

THE Pangasinan Tourism Council (PTC) has been revived and reorganized by Gov. Amado Espino Jr. to draw up and implement a coordinated tourism program around the province.

Espino said the reorganization, undertaken by virtue of the governor’s Executive Order No.0143-2011, is necessary after most of the council’s members have vacated their positions or no longer represent the component offices or organizations included in the Provincial Tourism Board, that was created under Executive Order No.0094-07-2007.

The PTC is tasked to set up a sustainable tourism program for Pangasinan with the participation of local government units and industry players from the private sector.

Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim, who once served as general manager of Duty Free Philippines, has been appointed vice-chairman of the council.

“We need to improve the services one particular area can offer. Even if you have a beautiful site, but road access is not suitable or even unavailable, tapos wala pang facilities, it will not attract local and foreign tourists. These are the things we need to carefully study, so that we could prepare a package for Pangasinan as a major tourist destination,” Lim said. (with report from CIO)

This was said by former President Fidel V. Ramos during the book launch of 111111-111 FVR WOW last November 11 at the elegant Sison Auditorium here.
The former President commended the leadership of Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. whom he monickered GATE as he further said that the provincial chief executive is the “gateway to progress and peace” for Pangasinan. “Be a part of the gateway leading to Number One. Kulang ang daang tuwid. Kailangan ng daang tama thru the gate,” he said.
Gov. Espino hailed Pres. Ramos for his latest endeavor even as he disclosed that the launching of the book, which is a collection of the latter’s timeless quotes that summarizes the best practices in citizenship and governance, will definitely inspire every reader and leader of society to make the best in a lifetime.
The Governor also said that the book serves as a timely inspiration in the province’s quest to become Number One as the present administration enriches the history, culture and arts of Pangasinan.
The book is authored by Melandrew T. Velasco, a Pangasinese writer, who served as public relation officer both for President Ramos and Gov. Espino, during his years at the PNP when he was the provincial director.
Velasco said that both leaders share a lot of things in common. “They are both generous, both great taskmasters, both profession-oriented, and both dedicated sons to their fathers,” he cited.
The book launching was attended by the members of the Provincial Board headed by Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr., some local government unit officials led by Mayor Noel Nacar, PNP spearheaded by Provincial Director Rosueto Ricaforte, representatives from different sectors and line agencies, student leaders, FVR classmates, provincial department heads and chiefs of hospitals, and Pangasinan First Lady Priscilla Espino.
Said affair coincides with the 111th birth anniversary of Ambassador Narciso Rueca Ramos, Pres. FVR’s father.

When Faith Calls: Our Lady of Manaoag, Pangasinan

Filipinos are naturally god-fearing. Even as children, it has always been a custom to visit the church every Sunday or whenever possible. Our Lady of Manaoag church is a famous destination for thousands of catholic devotees not only in the Philippines but from all over the world as well. This Roman Catholic Pilgrimage site is situated approximately 200 kilometers north of Manila; located in the municipality of Manaoag, province of Pangasinan.

Filipinos considered Our Lady of Manaoag as the revered patroness of the sick, the helpless, and the needy. Countless tales of its healing powers were accounted since its foundation in 1610. Several stories of miraculous events were also reported including the Japanese bombing. During the World War II, the Japanese army dropped several bombs in the area. Some exploded while those that fell on the roof of the shrine inflicted no damage and failed to explode.

A 17th century Roman Catholic ivory statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding a rosary on the left hand and a child on the right. This was brought to the Philippines by Padre Juan de San Jacinto from Spain.

A staircase that rises to a second floor at the back of the altar was made for the devotees who desire to fervently touch even just the garment of the patron.

Similar to any other Catholic churches, devotees light candles when visiting this place. A personal prayer is said before lighting a candle offering. For those who do not have their own, a standard prayer hangs from the ceiling. Candles are lit either as a gesture of thanksgiving for granted favors and blessings, or as a way of lifting up prayer intentions either personal or for other people.

After praying and touching the garment of the patron, devotees usually pass through the souvenir shops outside. Different items can be bought for loved ones back home; from miniature patron replica, rosaries, prayer books, amulets and some native Pangasinan delicacies.

It is the foremost tourist destination in the province of Pangasinan in northern Philippines. It is a five-hour drive north of Manila passing through Pampanga, Tarlac, and finally to Alaminos. The jump-off point is the town of Lucap. From the wharf, it is just a short 20-minute boat ride to the islands.With over a hundred little islets sprinkling a vast area of some 1,844 hectares of calm and clear blue waters. Cape Bolinao Beach, Pangasinan, Philippines

The white beach in Barangay Patar has a fresh water source nearby believed to be an outlet of an underground river. Here, the surf is wilder as it hits the boulders along the shore. The landmark is the old lighthouse that stands on a hill. The tourism infrastructure is not well developed but the locals are very helpful to tourists. As many of its inhabitants are fishermen, Bolinao is also a paradise for seafood gourmets.

DAGUPAN CITY, July 1 (PIA) -- This city’s extensive river systems crisscrossing the landscape are now being developed to lure visitors and tourists and thus become a potential rich revenue source.

The River Cruise, launched during the month-long Bangus festival in April, is a wondrous romantic journey along the serene Dawel-watak river featuring lush mangroves, migratory birds, long winding river with clear waters.

Since its launch more than two months ago, Dagupenos and their neighbors and even people from far places have the opportunity to enjoy a free ride which averages about 45 minutes to one hour.

The Dawel-Watak river system, a favorite place for migratory birds because of the lush mangroves on both sides, is bigger and longer than the Loboc river in Bohol, said Mayor Benjamin S. Lim, who, as a successful businessman, has been looking for ways for the city to excel more aside from being a trading, educational and health center in the North.

The river cruise utilizes floating “nipa huts” built on a platform attached to two parallel bancas. A motorboat with a four-horsepower engine and attached to the back part steers the floating hut.

Busy ferrying riders are two huts which can accommodate up to 25 persons and a bigger one that can hold up to 40 people.

Now that that a public docking area was already built along the national road below the Dawel bridge, it is now easier for people to access the area. Before, the privately-owned San Marino dock was temporarily utilized.

The docking area was inaugurated on Friday afternoon.

Riders could not hold their excitement as they make their trip. “Oh! beautiful, what a sight,” is always overheard from them.

Tourism Regional Director Martin Valera joined the initial cruise with Mayor Lim playing host.

The Bangus Festival which itself has been drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly. The festival, which usually opens on the first week of April and ends on May 1, has been made part of the traditional Pistay Dayat (Sea festival).

The mayor said the city’s inner rivers of Dawel and Watak are much greener and more serene than the one in Loboc which has successfully projected its River Cruise project.

He, however, stressed that the most important thing is for the city to be able to create job opportunities for the people.

“The boats are made here in our city so makakapagbigay tayo ng trabaho sa mga boat makers. Then we will hire cooks, waiters, and a person who will steer the boat. At the same time, we will be more conscious in making our rivers cleaner this time kasi ito na ngayun ang minamarket natin,” he said.

Tourists flock to Hundred Islands even during rainy days

ALAMINOS CITY, Aug. 16 (PNA) -- Tourists continue to flock to the Hundred Islands in droves notwithstanding the rainy season.

This was disclosed by Alaminos City Administrator Wilmer Panabang who estimated the daily arrival in the province's number tourist spot to 200 and more than 1,000 during weekends.

In fact, he said, the number of tourist arrivals in the Hundred Islands improved this year as compared to last year and in 2008 and 2009 which were marked by down trend in tourism due to the effects on the industry wrought by Tyhoons "Ondoy" and "Pepeng".

Thus, even during the rainy season, tourists--mostly domestic, are arriving in droves, he added.

The number of foreign tourists arriving has not increased though but there was no downtrend in their number too. Most of the foreign tourists are Koreans and Japanese and a few Americans and Europeans.

Panabang said that more tourists will come to the Hundred Islands if they can cut their travel time in going to Alaminos from Manila which is five hours to only 40 minutes by means of air travel.

This can only be realized, he said, if the Pangasinan Airport, which is now undergoing construction, will soon be completed.

The project, initiated by Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza, has the backing of President Benigno S. Aquino III and Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas.

To date, land acquisition and earth movement are now ongoing at the proposed Pangasinan Airport using initial P200 million released by DOTC.

Panabang said of the amount, P50 million formed the first trance and the second trance amounted to P150 million. All these were used to acquire 80 hectares of land that will form part of the airport's runway of 150 hectares.

"Hopefully, the third trance of another P60 million will be released in the next few weeks, good for another 60 hectares of land to be acquired," Panabang said.

If completed, the Pangasinan airport will first serve domestic tourists and later expanded to an international airport. With a 150-hectare runway, excluding its access roads, the Pangasinan Airport will be bigger than the Laoag International Airport which is only 70 hectares.

He said a foreign investor is also keen on building an 18-hole golf course in Alaminos to complement the airport project. (PNA)

On September 2000, the Leisure Coast Resort began operations for its Sabina Restaurant and its two Function halls. Two months later, the 250 yard driving range and outdoor Family Garden Grill were also opened to the public.

Gef’s waterpark opened on December 2000 to the delight of the general public. Since its opening, the waterpark has attracted more than 150,000 visitors through its gates. Today, it continues to be a favorite holiday destination.

The year 2001 saw Leisure Coast Resort opening cabañas (hotel rooms) for its out-of-town guests. The rooms offer convenience coupled with all the amenities and facilities of many first-class hotels. Aside from this, a 9 hole pitch and putt golf course was also constructed.

On February 2005, more developments were opened to the public. Niki's Garden, a garden type function hall was introduced. It instantly became a favorite for engaged couples and their wedding coordinators. At the same time, Ethan's place began serving our clients who preferred the al fresco dining experience.

Presently, Leisure Coast is planning on adding more cabaña rooms and expanding the current waterpark to add more rides and attractions.

Bigger Gali-langoy Eco-Adventure Race this September

Exhilarating and amazing as it was, the Gali-Langoy Eco-Adventure Race will have its second edition not next year but this coming September.

This was promised by Mayor Hernani A. Braganza during the awarding rites of this very successful staging of this unique aqua-triathlon at Lucap Wharf here to the delight of the participants and tourists alike.

"The competition looked too easy for our athletes," said Braganza referring to the island to island swim, island to island parao and island to mainland kayak race which was covered by GMA 7 and ABS-CBN and local radio stations and print media.

“We might just as well make it more competitive and even longer to bring out the best in them,” added the city’s biggest sports fan and enthusiast.

“Probably a 3-day event will do, a whole day swim relay, another day for parao race and one more day for kayak race from Hundred Islands to the mainland.”

Braganza said the activity will be this September as the highlight of the celebration of the 6th anniversary of the Hundred Islands turn-over from the Philippine Tourism Authority to the city government of Alaminos.

The mayor, who personally witnessed how exciting the race was and how the eleven teams enjoyed the competition, was surprised how the local tankers finished the 1.41 kilometer swim leg in 37 minutes.

He also disclosed that after seeing the parao race, local and foreign tourists expressed interest on renting the parao and possibly go fishing outside the marine sanctuary.

Braganza said local fishermen using parao nowadays could easily have an income of P 200 a day from an average of 4 -5 kilos of fish caught.

“If they will have it rented to our guests, they could easily earn P 200 in just an hour," he explained.

“And this will basically be another livelihood opportunity for our people aside from the kayaking industry which is now flourishing in our city. We wanted the Hundred Islands to be bigger than Burnham Park from our sister city - Baguio and ultimately be known as the kayaking capital of the country".

Team Telbang 2 which dominated the swimming competition is this year’s champion with Team Lucap 1 and Team Telbang finishing the second and third place, respectively.

Ryan Gutierez easily claimed the Lopez to Quezon swim leg and submitted a 5.52 mins., Nelson Casipit ( 23.09 mins.) ruled the Quezon to Clave Islands leg and Aldrin Gutierrez (18.85 mins) won the Clave to Children Island leg.

In parao race, Team Lucap 1 reigned supreme and the winning pairs were Ronnie Alcartado/Roger Abrocio, (18.85mins), Rey Villena/JR Donato (13.28 mins) and Joeny Navarro Jr./Dendo Villena (19.09mins).

The duo of Alcartado and Abrocio also topped the Governor Island to Lucap wharf kayak race which clocked 28.06 mins.

Top three teams in the First Gali-Langoy Eco-Adventure Race received especially designed e-kawayan trophies, medals and cash prizes amounting to P 30, 000, P 20, 000 and P10, 000 for the first, second and third placers respectively.

Leg winners also received P 3, 000 pesos each while the top finishers in the grueling Quezon to Clave Islands and Clave to Children Island swim legs got P 5, 000 each.

Non winning teams also received a P 3,000 consolation prize.

Mayor Braganza personally handed the prizes to the race winners.Joining him during the awarding rites were Vice Mayor Cesar Manzano, city councilors Earl James Aquino and Margielou Orange Humilde, Jose Elvis Sison, Gali-langoy chairman; ACPO Chief- Col. Rollie Saltat, vice chairman; and Ernesto Sarmiento, race director.

In separate interviews with Pangasinan media and ABS-CBN North Central Luzon and GMA 7, Braganza thanked the organizers, sponsors and the participations for the successful staging of this one of a kind eco-sports adventure.

He cited that Gali-langoy is another program of our city government aimed at promoting not just the majestic beauty of the Hundred Islands National Park but also the Alaminians’ innate talent in swimming and sheer endurance in eco-adventure sports, stressed the mayor.

“This event is one of the highlights of this year’s celebration of our Pista’y Dayat (Sea Festival) that includes the thanks-giving mass, iguhit mo ang yaman ng hundred islands (pantalan art painting),the nightly concert at the wharf and highly anticipated fireworks display and the MOA signing on the crafting of short courses in our city,” he said.

“Through Gali-langoy, we are also promoting these low impact environment friendly activities in order to protect the natural habitat and breeding ground of hundreds of marine species that now thrive in our park,” he stressed.

One that will further ensure a healthier and bountiful protein bowl for Alaminians and the Pangasinenses in general.

73,000 tourists flock to Hundred Islands from Jan-April

MANILA, Philippines – Tourism in the Hundred Islands National Park had a flourishing turnout in the early months of 2011 with thousands of tourists flocking to the place for their holiday getaway.

According to the local government, 73,000 tourists visited the main attraction of Alaminos, Pangasinan from the months of January to April this year.

More tourists also spent their Holy Week vacation in the park this year at 12,195, as compared to last year’s record of 10,560.

The increase is attributed to the new outdoor activities offered by the park.

Aside from swimming, the park also offers snorkeling, scuba diving, and bird watching.

The Hundred Islands National Park is also promoting island-hopping for adventure seekers, with rates being offered as low as P800.

Delighted by the turnout, park manager Rey Livara said: "Natutuwa kami na marami pa rin ang dumaragsa dito."

The local government remains keen on attracting more and more tourists in the coming months.

Tourism has been a boon for the business sector particularly those in the hotel, restaurant and souvenirs services, Livara said.

Vendor Anita Baniqued added: "Madami talaga ngayong (turista)… kaya kami naman nakakaipon na din para sa pamilya."

Natividad’s nature resort: “Sirok ti Manga”

NATIVIDAD–“Sirok ti Mangga”, Ilocano for under the mango tree, is a new nature resort located in the foothills of the Caraballo Mountains in this small, quiet town which is hoping to boost its tourism industry.

Situated in the middle of a 10-hectare mango plantation owned by the municipal government, the resort, nicknamed StM, is ideal for camping and nature walks.

Its other facilities include a swimming pool, a few air-conditioned cottages, and a zipline, the first of its kind in Pangasinan, that is 150 meters long.

The zipline, called Sky Plaza, gives a view of the town proper and the surrounding areas.

PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP

StM, located in Barangay Pila, Bachelor East, is owned by the municipal government in partnership with private investors from the town.

Mayor Rodrigo Rafael said the resort was initially developed by the municipal government under the previous administration of Mayor Alejandra Supnet.

To bankroll the development of the tourism site, Supnet sought private investors from among the town’s residents.

The swimming pool and the cottages were built using the private sector investment while the zipline, which cost P6 million, was financed by the municipal government.

Income from the resort is shared between the local government and its private partners.

Rafael, who assumed as mayor in July last year, said he is carrying on with the development plans for StM.

Other facilities set to be built are a social hall which can accommodated seminars and conferences by government agencies, additional air-conditioned cottages, and a chapel.—LM

If you let the global economic ups-and-downs work to your advantage, adopt some personal austerity measures in pricier destinations, and head towards up-and-coming destinations, you can stay on the road longer for less.

Fresh from Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2011, we bring you this bargainous bounty of 10 budget-friendly destinations where you can get the most bang for your buck.

1.Bangladesh

This subcontinental treat might just be the cheapest place on earth to travel.Bangladesh offers marvellous meals for under US$1, a mid-range hotel room for less than 10 times that. This means that anyone who isn’t a masochist goes up a price bracket or two. You’ll pay a little more to get around the Sunderbans National Park on a tiger-spotting tour – US$150 or thereabouts – but it’s still peanuts, even compared to what you pay next door in India.

Bangladesh is almost disgracefully under-visited. Here, paddleboat is one of the main forms of transport and you can trek, canoe and even surf to your heart’s content with some of the world’s friendliest people for company. The Rocket is Bangladesh’s most famous ferry, running daily between the capital Dhaka and Khulna. First-class river cruising for 27 hours will cost US$15.

2. Nicaragua

As other Central American destinations inflate prices with an influx of travellers, there are still a few good value delights to be found in the region. Nicaragua is somewhere where the careful traveller can get by spending US$15 a day, and midrange comforts can be had for less than double that amount. What you get for your money is nothing short of spectacular: hammock-hanging opportunities on the mythically unspoilt Corn Islands, bar-hopping and live music in colonial León and Granada, and volcano trekking on the Isla de Ometepe. Paying departure tax when flying out of Nicaragua may be the single most expensive thing you do at US$32, and this is usually already included in the price of your ticket.

3. Washington, DC

Lincoln Memorial: free. National Air and Space Museum: free. Capitol: free. Library of Congress: free. White House and State Department: tough to get in, but free. Get the picture? Washington is a city packed with iconic things to do and very few of them ask for an entry fee. If you’re happy to walk and bring your own lunch bag, you can absorb centuries of American history, politics and culture without having to so much as touch a dollar bill all day. DC’s Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens is the only national park in the USA devoted to water plants. It’s free.

4. Paris

The French capital is never going to win any awards for cheapness, but here’s a winning formula that anyone can afford. First, you need a Swiss Army knife. Then stroll into a boulangerie – every neighbourhood has several – and buy a freshly baked baguette for €1 (US$1.35) or thereabouts. Follow your nose to your next stop, a fromagerie, and grab a fist-sized hunk of cheese. Lastly, grab a bottle of wine, nothing fancy, and head for the banks of the Seine opposite Notre Dame or the garden adjacent to Pont Neuf on a sunny day, preferably with a friend or loved one. Zut alors – a Parisian dining experience for under €10 (US$13.50) per person that any local would declare formidable! You’ll find everything for a picnic on Rue Montorgueil in the 2nd arrondissement.

5. Namibia

Botswana wants big spenders only and South Africa’s not the deal it once was, so southern Africa bargain hunters should head for Namibia. Well set-up for backpackers, this is still a territory of US$50 or less a day if you’re careful, with an excellent network of local minibuses and tours aimed at budget travellers to go to places public transport won’t. And if you go up a price bracket you’ll eat and sleep well in excellent-value midrange options that bring South Africans flocking over the border year after year. Admission to the Cape Cross Seal Reserve on the Skeleton Coast costs a mere US$3 per person.

6. Philippines

The Philippines may be just about to rudely shove Thailand off the ‘best cheap beaches’ perch it’s occupied for the best part of two decades. While travelers argue long and hard about which is cheaper, there’s no denying Thailand is more popular. For those who desire nothing more than to find great, undiscovered beaches, surf the odd wave and eat unique, distinctive food for under US$20 a day, the Philippines has the edge. Add in the possibility of beach camping along the Zambales Coast or in the Bacuit Archipelago and you’ve got the recipe for timeless island hopping that suits any budget. Ferries link many idyllic destinations in the Philippines. Expect to pay around US$5 for each hour you’re on the water.

7. Argentina

The Argentine peso is the currency that keeps on giving. In the middle of the last decade, incredulous visitors regularly queried bills for being too cheap after feasting on fine steak and red wine. While not quite the bargain it was during those years,Argentina still offers a terrific deal. Characterful mid-range hotels start at around AR$180 (US$46) per night in Buenos Aires and Patagonia, and half that in other places. Argentina’s gourmet eating houses usually won’t charge more than US$30 a head and you can enjoy wonderful meals on much less. Best of all, you get great quality food, wine, lodging and transport throughout Argentina for your money.

Bounce up and down with some of Buenos Aires’ more raucous citizens at a fútbol(soccer) match. Terrace tickets for Boca Juniors, River Plate and others cost from AR$14 (US$3.60).

8. Naples

Italy: not cheap. Even a slice of pizza can seem like lousy value if you’ve come from a part of the world that uses a currency that’s slumped against the euro. Thank heavens then for Naples. Here’s one Italian city that prefers food that’s fresh, simple and good value. You can dine brilliantly on the city’s spectacular street food alone. Naples eschews budget-blasting frills in favour of small and simple B&Bs charging around €75 (US$100) per night. Best of all, Naples is a city full of life being lived for its own sake, with few of the tourist hordes who descend on other Italian classics further north.

The ferry from Naples to the idyllic island of Capri, one of Italy’s classic journeys, costs a mere €10.50 (US$14) with Caremar.

9. Ukraine

Eastern Europe isn’t the US50c-a-beer haven for bargain hunters it once was, but good deals are still available. OK,
mid-range hotels can be pricey, especially in the capital, Kyiv, but good budget options in Lviv and Odesa are available for less than US$50. Once on the ground you’ll find your funds go a long way. Public transport is fantastic value, with a train between Kyiv and the lovely city of Lviv costing less than US$10, and a tram ride from the station into town a hundredth of that. If you know where to look, food, beer and coffee can be really very cheap.

One of Ukraine’s top sights is the immense and moving Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv; it includes the final resting place of national poet Ivan Franko and thousands of dramatic tombstones. You get hours of fascinating wandering for less than US$1.

10. Syria

While some neighbouring countries up the entry costs to ancient sites, Syria remains an excellent-value place to travel. As you might expect, there are superb streetshwarma (sandwiches), felafel and eye-tightening qahwa (coffee) available for small change. A ride between Aleppo and Damascus won’t touch US$5, and a daily budget of US$50 will get you well into the mid-range bracket. Best of all, the delights of the Old City of Damascus and the souq at Aleppo are free. If you get locked into a tussle with a carpet merchant in the latter, though, you’re on your own.

Alaminos City bags another environment award

ALAMINOS CITY—This city, home of the well-known Hundred Islands National Park, was conferred the regional 2010 Likas Yaman Award for Environmental Excellence by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

With the award, Alaminos earned the distinction as having the “Best LGU-Initiated Environmental Project " for its pioneering efforts in the conservation, protection and rehabilitation of its vast ecosystem and rich natural resources.

The city now qualifies for the national award.

City Administrator Wilmer Panabang, who represented Mayor Hernani Braganza, received the award during the Closing and Awarding Ceremonies of the 2010 Environment Month Celebration held in San Fernando City, La Union.

“This will further inspire our city mates and our local officials to rally behind the programs of the city for the continued protection and sustainable development of our marine environment and vast ecosystem,” Panabang said.

According to the 2010 Likas Yaman Award Validation Team, the city of Alaminos clinched the award for promoting sustainable development of the coastal and marine resources through mangrove reforestation, fish sanctuary management, mariculture development, coral reef protection, river enhancement and protection, marine park and wildlife conservation.

Alaminos was also cited for its excellent fishery laws enforcement and the promotion of its eco-tourism thrusts, which are guided by the principles of pro-active, participatory, good governance and excellent leadership.

ANOTHER AWARD

At the same time, the Alaminos City National High School (ACNHS) was also bestowed the “Most Outstanding School Environmental Outreach Program Award”.

ACNHS headed by Dr. Gloria Reinoso, Principal IV, bagged the award for initiating and successfully implementing environmental projects and programs in both the school and the community aimed at environmental protection and sustainable development.

In 2006 and 2007, Alaminos was declared the Best Performing LGU in Coastal Resource Management (CRM) in Region 1 by the Regional Development Council and the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Region I.

The city also received various awards and citations from the provincial government since 2004 when Alaminos became the grand prizewinner in the provincial search for the Cleanest and Greenest Coastal City/Municipality in Pangasinan.

The following year the city was adjudged Best Program Implementer of the provincial government’s Linis Dayat Program.

In 2006 and 2007, the city bagged home the awards for Best Coastal LGU in Mangrove Development and Best Program Implementer-CRM Pioneering Cluster, respectively, also from the provincial government.

Alaminos was also named as Model LGU in CRM Implementation for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009.

And just recently, PAKAR Award, an environmental award program in Pangasinan, went to Bued River being the cleanest inland body of water in the entire province.

LINGAYEN — Pangasinan Pistay Dayat 2009 offers a complete summer spectacle here that caters to children, teenagers and adults, as the provincial government prepares a series of fun-filled activities infused with social relevance from April 25 to May 2.

The Lingayen beach will host most of the events aimed at raising awareness on environmental concern and preserving the culture and tradition of Pangasinan.

The weeklong celebration is set to kick off with a fluvial parade along the Agno River at eight in the morning of April 25 and a boodle fight at lunchtime in Salasa, Bugallon.

Pangasinan Tourism and Trade Expo will also open on the same day at 4:00 a.m. featuring the best product of every municipality and city in the province which will also coincide with Drum & Lyre/Drum and Bugle dubbed as “Banda Parada” exhibition from Capitol Plaza to Lingayen beach.

Music will take center stage in the evening during the semi-final of the “Konsyerto sa Gulpo,” a concert featuring the original composition of local bands advocating environmental awareness. The six districts will each have two representatives to compete in the concert.

Children will have a full day of fun flying kites or sculpting sand castles on April 26 during the Children’s Day or “Gantilan na Ugugaw ed Dayat.”

At 4:00 p.m., the multi-awarded Calasiao Children’s Choir, which is set to join international choir fest, will render a concert at the Lingayen Beachfront. The Bingo Socials will also be simultaneously held to raise funds for the Choir.

They will also be treated to a world class performance of amazing acrobatic show and visually stunning dance number by the Wanders International Circus on April 29 at 7:00 p.m.

After its successful debut last year, the Grand Orchestra and Ballroom Dancing Showdown now dubbed as “Sangkabalegan ya Suwayan tan Sayawan” will return on April 27 with a bigger number of participants from four last year to 10 this year.

The loveliest ladies of Pangasinan will vie for the coveted title of Limgas na Pangasinan 2009 Talent competition on April 28 at 4:00 p.m.

The yearlong search for Cleanest River and Coastal Municipality/City will have its awarding ceremony on May 1 at the Lingayen Beachfront. The search is a brainchild of Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. aimed at protecting the coastal and rivers in Pangasinan.

Pangasinan town puts up food strip for seafood

DAGUPAN CITY, April 23 (PNA) — Binmaley town will put up a unique seafood eatery strip along the road in Barangay Lomboy to serve exclusively seafood, like bangus, siganid (malaga), shrimps, prawns, crabs and others to tourists and visitors.

Binmaley Mayor Simplicio Rosario said each eatery would cook live seafood which the customers could buy from a common fish buying area nearby, to be cooked in their presence.

Speaking during the “Kapihan sa Lenox Hotel” here on Wednesday, Rosario said this was one way by which Binmaley could promote its rich harvest of aqua-marine products.

“I am looking for a lot where we can set up the area from where diners can buy their live fish to be cooked,” Rosario said.

The mayor lamented that though Binmaley produced more bangus than Dagupan, the latter beat his town in putting up the Bangus Festival and in proclaiming itself as the Bangus Capital of the World.

Nevertheless, Binmaley has its own "Malaga and Sugpo Festival" which is being held during the town fiesta first week of February each year.

Rosario said there were many eateries that were serving exclusively seafood along the Amado Espino Sr. Avenue in Barangay Lomboy that led towards the Agno River dike road, before exiting along the national highway leading to Bugallon town.

Binmaley is a first class town in Pangasinan just west of Dagupan City. The town is famous for its fishponds that produces the tasty bangus, malaga and shrimps, among others.

In setting up the seafood eatery strip, the municipal government would put up decorative lights along the road in front of the eateries as its part in promoting seafood to the Filipinos’ palate, Rosario said.

He said he had already talked to owners of existing eateries in that strip, including future entrepreneurs and exhorted them to clean their surroundings and establishments in preparation for the influx of diners. (PNA)

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, April 5 (PNA) -- The Pista'y Dayat celebration in the province to be held from April 25 to May 3, promises to be spectacular, fun-filled and the grandest holiday ever.

With heavy preparations now going on, the sea festival is expected to draw thousands of spectators who shall witness must-see events of the grandest festivity in Pangasinan.

Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. said this year's festivities will showcase his main advocacies -- environment and tourism -- in order to raise the level of awareness among Pangasinenses on the need to save, rehabilitate and promote the eco-tourism industry of the province.

With its theme, “Matuwan Pasimbalo: Gayaga na Luyag Tayo,” the sea festival is expected to serve as a showroom of the various accomplishments of the province notably on environment and tourism.

This also serves as a thanksgiving and unifying event among Pangasinenses in their march to prosperity and progress in order to realize the dawning of the Golden Era in Pangasinan.

DAGUPAN CITY, March 31 (PNA) — A city councilor here, who is a certified diving instructor, confirmed that there are many diving sites in Pangasinan, particularly along the province’s western part.

Dagupan City Councilor Karlos Liberato Reyna IV, president of the Tiblong Diving Association, said divers could explore the underwater sites in Burgos, Anda, Surip in Bani; Bolinao and the Hundred Islands off Alaminos City.

Unfortunately, according to Reyna, Dagupan is not a diving site, because the beach is of black sand and does not have any rock corals, which are what the divers really explore.

When candidates for Miss Earth visited the Hundred Islands late last year, Councilor Reyna was invited by Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza to guide the Miss Earth beauties on how to scuba dive.

”Since most of the Miss Earth candidates wanted to learn how to scuba dive, I taught them only the basics of diving just to showcase to them the underwater beauty of the Hundred Islands”, said Reyna is the grandson of former Dagupan City Mayor Liberato Reyna Sr., once a be-medalled swimmer of the University of Sto. Tomas.

Tiblong Diving Association, said Reyna, was organized not only to promote diving and tourism in Pangasinan, but also to support the campaign for environmental awareness on the need to protect underwater resources.

Legal officer and co-founder of Tiblong is Lawyer Jose Netu Tamayo, also a councilor of Dagupan City, who is an army reservist with the rank of captain. (PNA)

The Beaches of Agno, Pangasinan

The town of Agno is characterized by beautiful rolling terrain and rainfed rice fields which one traverses on the way to the town proper. As one nears the poblacion, or town plaza, the road passes along the beautiful Mabini river, which in turn meets with the South China Sea further west. The town shares borders with the town of Bani to the north, the town of Mabini and Alaminos City to the East and with Burgos to the South.

It is a quaint little town whose main livelihood is fishing and agriculture, although a number of her sons and daughters work as doctors, nurses, engineers and accountants in numerous countries around the globe. The town plaza is home to a centuries old Roman Catholic church, as well as one of the first congregations of the Philippine Independent Church.

The town boasts of natural attractions such as the Mabini river, the Umbrella Rocks in Sabangan, as well as several beaches — Agno Beach being the longest and most popular. There are several other beaches hidden along the coast such as the Macaboboni cove (which features a small cave) as well as a white beach in Brgy. Gayusan. To the southern end of Agno Beach, the brave of heart can dive from a two story high rock amidst crashing waves and end up in a beautiful coral garden below. Also, a Japanese gunboat is said to have sunk a few hundred meters away from Agno's shores, awaiting discovery by curious divers. The summer months of April and May are a good time to go as the town's market abounds with fruit such as mangoes and duhat, as well as fresh catch such as tuna, flying fish, grouper, lobsters and other treasures of the sea.

DOT: Pangasinan now No. 1 tourist destination in Ilocos

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, March 15 (PNA) -- The province of Pangasinan is now the number one tourist destination in Region 1 based on a survey conducted recently by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

The survey showed the province under the leadership of Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr. posted a record 41.47 percent tourist arrivals as compared to Ilocos Norte, the former top grosser in tourism in the region, with 35.64 percent.

Two years ago, Pangasinan was the tail-ender among four Ilocos provinces in the number of tourist arrivals, according to the DOT.

Gov. Espino said he is pushing hard to promote tourism in Pangasinan as part of the overall development plan of his administration.

Cited as the main reason for the improved tourism program in Pangasinan was the grand transformation of the capitol building, from an old rickety one built in the early 1900, to become one of the best capitols in the entire country today.

The capitol is now a premier tourist come-on of the province, serving as the official house of all elected provincial officials.

In the early part of his administration, Governor Espino vowed to make the capitol the centerpiece of tourism in Pangasinan.

Also undertaken, aside from the refurbishing of the capitol building, was the repair of the adjacent Kalantiao, Malong and Finance buildings and its component areas such as the Veterans Park and Lingayen beach front.

The provincial government-owned Capitol Resort Hotel has also been refurbished to serve as a venue for the various functions of the provincial government and the public.

To boost tourism, the provincial government bought six eco-tourism buses that could bring tourists to any point in Pangasinan after they had visited the capitol.

Espino said the provincial government's Tour Assistance Program provided tour and escorting services produced seven DOT-certified/accredited tour guides through a first-ever Tour Guiding Seminar.

Aside from these, the province has also 18 active tour guides who are all employees of the provincial government.

About 7,000 visitors and more than 16,000 others, mainly students from private, public, state colleges and universities, have already availed of the tour guiding services from the capitol to the different towns of the province.

Another historic undertaking of the provincial government was the launching and provision of six shuttle buses that ferry employees to and from their point of destination for free.

These buses are also utilized by all provincial employees in their study tours and in the conduct of their “Employees Tour and Team Building ” program.

The Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center was also rehabilitated to enable it to continuously host regional, national and international sporting events.

At the same time, Gov. Espino announced that the province has some 300 hectares of foreshore land in the northwestern part of Lingayen that is set to be converted into a sprawling eco-tourist zone. (PNA)

Tambobong Beach, Dasol, Pangasinan

This located in the Dasol,Pangasinan. The 18 kms distance from the town proper will take about 45 minutes to an hour of rough yet scenic drive. A white sand beach with water that teems with marine life. A favorite site of anglers and scuba divers.

This is a wonderful beach soon to be touched by tourists. The magnificent beauty of this exquisite virgin beach.

Tambobong has a beautiful extensive cream sand beach; great for strolling on. The sand is quite fine but not powder fine and some portions in the water are sandy--good for swimming. The water is crystal clear, very inviting!

Colibra Island, in Dasol has a beautiful shoreline; clear waters that is good for for diving and snorkeling. The island’s beach however has no shade. So be prepared to get a dark tan.

Comprising the 1,844-hectare nature and recreational park, the Hundred Islands National Park was the venue of the recent Triathlon Open organized by the Department of Tourism (DoT) together with the City Government of Alaminos and the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP).

DoT Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano said, "The event shows that sports can be a very good ingredient to further develop tourism in the country."

He added that Filipinos are capable of keeping pace with the rest of the world in sports that require great skills and rigid discipline and training.

Aside from being geared as Pangasinan's tourism capital, the Hundred Islands National Park will also be groomed as one of the prime adventure sports destinations in the country. "Hundred Islands can be a perfect getaway for those who thirst for adventure and adrenalinepumping sports," he said.

The triathlon, which is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world today, is a multi-sport race against time and other competitors, known as triathletes. It involves completing three sporting disciplines-swimming, biking, and running-done in immediate succession. The goal is to complete the three-leg race in the shortest time. The transition periods and activities, from swim to bike and from bike to run, are part of the race and included in the total time.

The Hundred Islands Triathlon Open attracted over 80 participants from neighboring cities and provinces, mostly from Manila and Subic. This is the first team-up between DoT and TRAP and is the second time that TRAP is collaborating with Alaminos City in the conduct of a triathlon event at the Hundred Islands. The first one was way back in 1996, dubbed as the "Alaminos Sprint Triathlon".

The race distance for the Hundred Islands Triathlon Open covered a 750-meter ocean swim, 20-km road bike, and 5km road run. The swim leg was held along the waters of Lucap Wharf through a rectangular swim course, while the bike and run legs were held on a concrete road at the Lucap area.

Alaminos City, known for its natural beauty, is decorated with a cluster of 124 islets (during low tide and 123 on high tide), located west of Lingayen Gulf. Hundred Islands was established as a park on Jan. 18, 1940 under Proclamation No. 667 issued by the late President Manuel L. Quezon making it the first national park, and in whose honor the biggest of the islands was named.

Truly a breathtaking wonder of nature, the islands are mainly composed of coralline limestone, characterized by a wide reef flat. A highly diverse ecosystem supports a variety of marine and terrestrial floral and fauna and wildlife resources while various marine resources such as sea grasses, corals and numerous fish species abound in the waters.

On many points between the islets, the waters are shallow making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Other recreational activities in the islands are picnicking, diving, island hopping and spelunking. Among the most frequently visited caves here are Milagrosa, Cathedral and Virgin.

Only three islands have been developed for tourism, namely: Governor; Quezon and Children's Islands.

How to get there:

From Lucap, one takes a 30-minute boatride to any of these islands. Of the three islands, only the Governor's Island keeps a guesthouse which is ideal for family use. It has two bedrooms, living room, dining room, bathroom and kitchen.

The nipa huts and mini pavilion with bedrooms at Children's Island are for budget travelers. Common areas are provided for dining and cooking. Meanwhile, Quezon Island is often visited by picnickers and campers. It also has a pavilion with picnic tables.

Bolinao is nothing like Boracay and that's the beauty of it. Just like many other beaches all over the country, it has its own charms that will definitely attract its own crowd.

Bolinao at the tip of the Pangasinan peninsula on Lingayen Gulf is sufficiently far from the madding crowd for one to get lost in the beauty and solitude of nature. Yet it is near enough (some 280 kilometers and four-and-a-half hours by car) to reach in a weekend trip on good roads from Manila .

For those who come to have a swim, the waters are crystal clear and the sands of Bolinao are white – well, actually yellowish and grainy unlike the well known sugar powdery white sands of Boracay. In a way, it is actually better because the sand dries off easily and can be brushed off in a few sweeps of the hand. Moreover, it feels good between the feet – sort of therapeutic for the nerve endings on the soles. The crunching sound that the feet make while walking on the sand adds to the awesome experience.

During the colder months of the year, large swells from the South China Sea break into huge waves as they approach inland. Bolinao is surrounded by a broad barrier of coral reefs that would prevent most swimmers from venturing far out but the area is ideal for wonderful solitary snorkeling with many soft sand beds all over. There are quite many resorts ranging from hotel type accommodation to those with thatched hut picnic sheds that cater to day trippers.

Bolinao surf – White Beach in Patar may have one of the biggest waves in Northern Luzon and may rival the already popular waves of La Union and Zambales. Pro surfers on their way up north to La Union are encouraged to take a side trip and confirm this.

22-kilometer-long barrier reef offshore, near Santiago Island , offers some wonderful solitary snorkelling. To explore the reef you can rent a banca for the day either at Bolinao wharf (two blocks north of the main road) or at one of the nearby beach resorts.

Cape Bolinao Lighthouse , constructed in 1905 and the second tallest lighthouse in the country. There's an easy path to the base of the building, and the views across the South China Sea are worth the climb.

Enchanted, Cindy and Wonderful Caves – for those looking for a break form the salt water, the caves in Patar have freshwater pools for a refreshing swim. The waters of Cindy caves are shallower and safer for children while those in Enchanted caves are already chest deep upon entry to the water.

Diving - Nor far offsore lie a number of old Spanish galleons and Chinese junks that local wisdom says contain treasure. Unfortunately, there are no accredited dive operators in the area except for an unnamed PADI dive center near the town proper, on the road to Patar, so to bring your own equipment may be your only chance of diving here.

There are only a couple of sights in the town itself. The small Bolinao Museum (Mon-Sat 9am-4pm ), on Rizal Street opposite Cape Bolinao High School , contains art, geology, botany and zoology materials collected in the area. The Church of St. James Fortress , also known as Bolinao Church is in the main square close to the museum, built by the Augustinians in 1609, it houses rare wooden statues and an antique altar with Astec masks brought by galleon from Mexico .

Accommodation

Tourists staying overnight are advised to bring all the essentials – including the toiletries as they might not be available in the rooms. Confirm with the resort beforehand.

Swimming

Safety first! Always observe safety measures especially when new to a swimming area.

It is better to swim in the morning when it is low tide and the sea is calmer. The winds pick up in the afternoon and would get chilly by nightfall.

Food

Bring all the consumables you wish to have unless you plan to dine at the resort restaurant. Some resorts charge a corkage fee per head for outside food brought in. Bring your own bottled water, enough for brushing.

Because of the construction, the road to the Lighthouse is closed and vehicles will have top be left at the foot of the hill. Prepare for a short but serious hiking.

Tourists start flocking in at around 2pm. Visit the caves in the morning if you want to have the caves to yourselves.

Every town has a roadside string of vendors selling local delicacies. Don't forget to stop by and sample some treats whether they may be coconut products, fresh catch from the sea or sundried fish.

1ST DISTRICT

ANDA
This lone island town of Pangasinan, which thrives on farming and deep-sea fishing, is unlike other "out-of-way" places for progress has already caught up with it. If a Pangasinense has a surname beginning with the letter C, chances are, he is from this town.

BOLINAO
This quaint little town boasts of several attractions aside from its rugged coastline and wide expanse of unspoiled seascapes. Its museum, a branch of the national museum, showcases the rich heritage of the people. Santiago Island, Cape Bolinao Beach, and the Church of St. James, almost 400 years old, are its stronger points.

BANI

LINGAYEN
An encomienda when Pangasinan was created, it was then designated and remains the provincial capital. Lingayen earned a place in contemporary history when American forces designated it the landing area for the liberation of Northern Luzon from the Japanese. The town is likewise noted for the Limahong Channel which the men of the Chinese pirate dug to elude the pursuing forces of Salcedo. Its "bagoong", also known as maniboc, referring to its place of origin, Barangay Maniboc, is the best in the market, local, national or international.

BINMALEY
A standout for three things: the largest church in the province, its furniture industry centered in Malindong, and its fishponds which gained for itself the title "Bangus Queen of the Philippines."

3RD DISTRICT

SAN CARLOS CITY
Became a city through a congressional act authored by the late Congressman Angel B. Fernandez after the late Speaker Eugenio Perez Sr. authored the city charter of Dagupan. The home town of legendary hero Palaris is the seat of exportable handicrafts.

CALASIAO
Religious devotees flock to this town, thanks to its miraculous Sanctuario del Señor Tesoro, chewy puto, tender Bocayo and coconut pastilles flavored with anise.

STA BARBARA
Tagged as the agricultural nursery of Pangasinan, it is expected to progress by leaps and bounds with the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) there, and with the entry of La Tondeña Distillery Plant. Its mango-tree-lined highway offers a breather to motorists.

MAPANDAN
A nationally known spot in Mapandan is Barrio Golden, once selected as a "model barrio" in integrated community development. "Tanggal Ya Bato" or stonewalls is its other tourist bait.

MALASIQUI
Like other Central Pangasinan towns, the Pangasinan dialect it its pure form is spoken here, in lilting tones in fact. Three of its barangays, Canan, Palapar and Lareg-lareg, offer spots ideal for relaxation.

BAYAMBANG
The site of the biggest fishing sanctuary in the province, the Mangabul Fishing and Hunting Park, and the best local school for teachers education, the Pangasinan State University-College of Education (formerly Central Luzon Teachers College once referred to as "Normal School"), it is part of history as the first national anthem was sung here by the revolutionary forces under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo.

4TH DISTRICT

DAGUPAN CITY
The commercial, financial, educational and communication center North of Manila, was traditionally called Nandaragupan meaning a "meeting place or rallying point". It used to be part of Binalatongan, now San Carlos City, four centuries ago. The City by the Gulf is where the great Pangasinan chieftain Andres Malong assembled his forces for a last stand against the Spanish troops after which people began calling the place as Nandaragupan. It is famous for its blue beach and Bonuan bangus.

MANGALDAN

SAN FABIAN
This town has always known for its beaches, nestled in a cove, so that only the gentlest of waves ripple across the crystalline blue waters. Now it is also byword for its beach resorts, rivaling those of La Union, its pawnpushres (it has the only chess school in the country, in fact) and its amateur pugilists.

SAN JACINTO
A tobacco belt and one of the province's earliest municipalities, its people's hospitality makes it ideal for residential purposes.

MANAOAG
Before Agoo, there was already Manaoag and inspite (or maybe because) of Agoo, pilgrimage to this town has increased over the past few months. The trek to the shrine of Nuestra Señora de Manaoag or "Apo Baket" or the Lady Who Calls which has come to be known as the "Antipolo of the North" has never waned. The Virgin's in the outskirt of the town is another well-visited spot for its curative springs.

5TH DISTRICT

BAUTISTA
In summer, watermelon abound in this town where Jose L. Palma wrote the lyrics of the Philippine National Anthem. Julian Felipe, for his part, composed the patriotic hymn in a house near the Bautista railroad station which stands up to this day.

ALCALA
Its long "Great Wall," actually that of the multi-million Agno River Control dike which sometimes spares the town from the onslaught of floods, is a testament to man's efforts to preserve himself and fend for himself from natural adversities.

STO TOMAS
With well-trimmed agoho trees, shrubs and bushes lining its streetsides, Sto. Tomas, monickered the "cutest town" in Pangasinan. Looks like a dainty girl on her birthday.

VILLASIS
Hemmed in between two bustling areas, Urdaneta City and Carmen, Villasis is one of the fastest developing town in the province. Considered as a "Vegetable Basket", it also thrives on its rice, corn and tobacco plantations. Its hilly barangays situated along the Malasiqui boundary is a perfect place for resort developers and agri-businessmen.

URDANETA CITY
Next to Dagupan City, it is most alive business-wise, what with its share of banking institutions, multi-national firms, market complexes, entertainment row and cattle trading center, the largest north of Manila.

LAOAC
The youngest town in Pangasinan has potentials to approximate the greatness of its mother town, Manaoag, but it has yet to find what would make it unique.

BINALONAN
This town has to its name the titles "Model Urban Community" and "Cleanest Municipality in the Philippines" garnered during the seventies.

POZORRUBIO
The Buccat Hill and the Sugcong Spring in this town are bywords in local tourism. Its Dilan bamboocraft products are export fares.

SISON
Baguio-bound travellers make their entrances and exits and stopovers in this gateway to the City of Pines. Its 'covenant' with cultural minorities, extensive barangay beautification program and industrialization efforts are paving the way for its modernization. Residents of this town get away from it all in Mountain bato, a compsite and Antong Creek, a picnickers' destination.

6TH DISTRICT

SAN MANUEL
This hometown of Juan C. Laya, of Diwang Kayumanggi fame, is one of the best rice producers of Pangasinan. It has a dam site which serves as a favorite picnic ground for vacationists, the Butao Spring and a mountain boy scout campsite.

SAN NICOLAS
It this town lies the historic Red Arrow Movement, otherwise known as WWII Villaverde Trail campsite, and the Agpay reforestation area with its crystal clear brooks.

ASINGAN
The hometown of first Pangasinense President, Fidel Valdez Ramos, is a "Vegetable Country" for any which direction one looks, eggplants, ampalaya and tomatoes, in short, "pinakbet," greet the eyes.

TAYUG
The premier town in the northeastern part of the province, it figured prominently in Philippine history, having served as the site of the Colorum uprishing let by Pedro Calosa, an incident immortalized by novelist Kerima Polotan-Tuvera.

NATIVIDAD
A farming town, Natividad has shed off its once sleepy profile, all because of Pila resort, however underdeveloped, a hilly area frequented by picnickers.

STA MARIA
Grafted from the town of Tayug, Sta. Maria has quite a number of faith healers flocked by those who seek to be eased off their discomforts. This town, with its pristine beauty, provides a sofa for the senses.

SAN QUINTIN
Though its "Little Luneta" - its town plaza-has given way for other must-visit places, its Dipalo Watershed is keeping them coming for its unique charm.

ROSALES
Pangasinan ends and begins in Rosales. Its Barangay Carmen in particular is the take-off point to Dagupan City, Baguio City and Nueva Ecija. Its "tupig" is superb-reason enough for a stopover.

BALUNGAO
Once visited for its hot springs, it is nevertheless an interesting tourist stopover for an oddity, a Rizal monument built right in the middle of the road.

UMINGAN
A farming town, Umingan came into existence after its natives, harrassed no end by bandits, fought back, putting an end to banditry ("inmingan") and started living a peaceful life.
